Hi all Soccer families,
So far Mrs. Doyle has only heard from 6 JV parents and about half of the Varsity families. If you are interested in attending the banquet this Sunday, please respond to her via the email that I sent a few weeks ago ASAP so that she can get a total headcount. She needs a total headcount for the caterer.
Details: Sun., Dec. 2nd at 5pm, Exchange Club Park in Hillsborough, catered by Kelsey's Cafe.
Thanks so much, and we look forward to seeing you there!

JV Plans for Fri., Oct. 19th and Mon., Oct. 22nd (J.F. Webb game canceled, home scrimmage instead!)
Due to not having enough players, the JV J.F. Webb team has had to cancel their game against us this coming Monday, Oct. 22nd.
However, the Orange JV players are so excited to play "one last game" that they have decided to host an intra-squad scrimmage on Monday instead. We would love to host as many JV players that want to play and parents that want to watch as possible. Afterwards, there will be a short "potluck" with any snacks or drinks that parents would like to bring, and Coach Hunter will go over some brief post-season details with the players and parents.
There will be no practice Tuesday, and although there will be no practice on Wednesday, JV players are encouraged to attend the Varsity Senior Night game against Northern Vance at 6pm.
Friday, Oct. 19th: Very short JV practice (4:10-5:15pm) to go over some end-of-season details and work out the details of Monday's scrimmage.
Monday, Oct. 22nd: ALL PLAYERS NEED TO BRING THEIR WHITE AND BLACK JERSEYS AND GAME SHORTS! 4:15 pm: Warm-up for players, 5:00pm: Intra-squad scrimmage (two 30-minute halves with a short halftime), 6:10pm: Snacks, etc.
Stay posted for details about the end-of-season banquet!
As always, feel free to contact Coach Hunter with questions.

JV defeats both Bartlett Yancey & Cedar Ridge in back-to-back games!
Caleb Anderson maneuvers the ball |
Starting their weekend off right, the JV team beat opponent Bartlett Yancey 2-0 Friday night. The team assessed the BY field and warmed up as the captains learned a few quick tips about choosing sides of the field based on the angle of the sun. After winning the coin toss, the Panthers took the field facing the sun. Both teams came out strong and played an aggressive game, and close to the end of the first half, captain Lionel Reid-Shaw was taken down inside the 18-yard box. On his penalty kick, he sent a rocket in to the right-hand side of the goal, sending the Panthers into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Danny Archibald, Player of the Game (BY) |
With about twenty minutes left, Lionel Reid-Shaw sent a cross in the air to the box. Outside midfielder Joey Ricca finished it decisively with a header, moving the Panthers up by two goals, where they would finish out the game.
Jaden Vines makes a crucial PK save |
Monday, Sept. 10th: 1-0 win over Cedar Ridge
The team then played Cedar Ridge on Monday, Sept. 10th. Relatively evenly matched, the teams played to a scoreless halftime. The second half was equally as exciting, with goalkeeper Jaden Vines stopping a Cedar Ridge PK to hold the score at 0-0 (shown right) and tons of missed shots from the JV Panthers. With the stands packed and four minutes left to play, after taking 22 shots, the Panthers finally put one away after Austin Goehring passed a ball to Lionel Reid-Shaw, who blasted his shot off of the keeper and into the net, sending the Panthers home with a narrowly won 1-0 game. The team couldn't have been more excited.
There were to players of the game against Cedar Ridge: Lionel Reid-Shaw and Jaden Vines.
Lionel Reid-Shaw celebrates after his game-winning goal |
Jaden collected 8 total saves, many of them by coming out and playing the ball with his feet. Jaden has shown massive amounts of improvement this year in goal! From never playing goalie to being able to read the field and to come out early with no hesitation, Jaden's improvement has been great to see. His touch on the ball with his feet has also greatly improved, and was evidenced in the game against Cedar Ridge. Great game, Jaden!
Lionel Reid-Shaw is now both the assist leader and leading scorer for the JV Panthers. He played various positions against the Red Wolves, and had excellent composure in all of them. Lionel is shown above right celebrating with teammates after bringing home the winning goal for the Panthers.
The JV team plays at home next Wednesday against Northwood high school at 5pm. We hope you'll join us!

Meet the Fall 2012 JV Men's Soccer Captains!
This year, the JV Men's Soccer team will be led by three all-new captains! Finn Hubbs, Chandler Compton, and Lionel Reid-Shaw were all selected by the team to be this year's captains.
Finn Hubbs (shown left) joins the team from last year, and although this is only his second year playing soccer, his tireless work ethic and natural athletic ability have made him a repeating starter as well as a leader on the field.
Chandler Compton (shown right) joins the OHS team as a freshman from Gravelly Hill. Thus far, as a defender, Chandler has scored the game-winner against Cedar Ridge and he hopes to add a few more goals to his name by the end of the season. Also a natural leader, Compton has a competitive side that quickly spreads to the rest of the team.
Lionel Reid-Shaw (shown left), the team's third captain, also joins the team as a freshman from Stanford. Currently the team's assist leader, Lionel's composed and positive presence in the center of the field makes his leadership a given.
Congratulations, captains, and let's continue to have a great season.

Be sure to complete Independent Workout #3 this weekend before Monday's game!
INDEPENDENT WORKOUT #3: SEPTEMBER 8, 2012
Only three
words should remind you why you have an Independent Workout this weekend:
Cedar Ridge -- Monday.
At home. Don't come in
Monday after two days off. How hard you
train this weekend and how much you focus on Sunday will both have great
impacts on our success against the Red Wolves.
On Monday, we will begin to warm-up promptly at 4:00pm (not
4:15!), so you need to get up to the field as soon as school gets out. On Saturday or Sunday (but preferably
Saturday so that on Sunday, you can rest before the game), all players are
expected to complete the following independent workout. It will take approximately an hour and a
half. You can meet up with other players
to complete the workout if that is easier for you OR supplement the workout
with a game/scrimmage, etc. There is
usually a group that plays Saturday morning pick-up soccer at Gold Park at
10am. You are welcome to head out
there if you'd prefer to play a game. Let's get ready for Monday.

Panthers win 1, lose 1 against Cedar Ridge and Jordan
By: Danny Archibald
The Orange Panthers played the Cedar Ridge Red Wolves on August 29th at Cedar Ridge. Right from the start, the Panthers had some great offensive maneuvers and worked their way around the Cedar Ridge defense putting many shots off, but the Cedar Ridge defense managed to hold them down 0-0 until halftime.
In the second half, with less than 20 minutes in the game, Gera Figueroa kicked a perfect corner kick straight towards the center of the box, and defender Chandler Compton put away a great goal with his head to pull the Panthers into a 1-0 lead. By the end of the game, CRHS was giving it all they had trying to tie the score up, but couldn't quite put a goal past the Panthers' defense. The final score for the game was 1-0, bringing home a win for the JV Panthers.
On September 5th, OHS played Jordan High School at Jordan. The Panthers played a good game, but were somewhat outmatched. Although the Panthers put up solid defense, Jordan scored 2 goals by the end of the first half. After halftime, Jordan scored 2 quick goals, bringing the score up to 4-0. At the end of the game Jordan put away 3 more, putting the score at 7-0. Never giving up, the Panthers came off the field upset but not broken. They immediately shifted their focus to the next game: Friday, September 7th against Bartlett Yancey.

JV Panthers win 1, lose 1 in first week of games
Austin Goehring takes on an E. Alamance player |
Despite the wait for both games to start and the torrential downpour on Tuesday, the team was excited to see the stands packed with friends and family.
Bartlett Yancey halftime discussion |
The conditions at the start of the game vs. Bartlett Yancey |
Caleb Anderson got the two goals for Orange against Bartlett Yancey, showing that he can still put the ball away regardless of rainy conditions. Anderson's second goal was assisted by center midfielder Lionel Reid-Shaw.
Both new goalkeepers (Alex Fish and Jaden Vines) got good time in goal and showed lots of potential for the season. Both keepers are naturally athletic and good the air, and they are consistently working hard each day on their keeper skills.
The JV team plays cross-town rival Cedar Ridge next Wednesday at Cedar Ridge at 5pm. We hope you'll be able to join us!

Team pictures for the Football Program will be taken Tuesday at 4pm. Players need to be dressed and ready to play by 4pm Tuesday. Following Tuesday's scrimmage, all practices will run from 4:15-6:15pm throughout the season unless otherwise noted.

Men's 2012 Fall Tryouts have begun!
Tryouts have begun for the Men's 2012 Fall season! We are excited by how many numbers and new faces we are seeing out there so far.
Due to potential inclement weather, we will be having double sessions each day this week. From Tuesday to Friday, there will be a fitness-focused morning session from 8-10am, and a skills-focused evening session from 6-8pm. Players are encouraged to attend as many sessions as they can, but only need to have 5 total sessions completed by the end of the week. Players need to bring running shoes and cleats to EVERY session, morning or night.
Below is a schedule of the plans for the evening sessions and the skills that will be assessed for each player on any given day. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to contact Coach Hunter: jennamariehunter@gmail.com
